TIPS ON HOSTING A SHOW

Learn everything is there to host a Show or even up your Anchoring Skills

Who says only people with the gift of gab can host?

Hosting/ Anchoring is no cakewalk.

Mustering up the courage to walk up to a stage, grabbing the attention of the audience and maintaining one’s energy throughout is a tough row to hoe.

But with these tips and tricks you’ll be able to shake off your jitters, leave the audience in awe and steal the limelight!

1. COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY:

To make sure the audience doesn’t doze off, be polite and abide by the 7 C’s of communication, i.e., be clear, concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete and courteous while communicating. Spreading negativity is a strict no-go area. Steer clear of using crutch words such as “like,” “um,” “ah,” etc. from your vocabulary by slowing down or taking pauses while speaking. Control your tone, speech rate and pitch to avoid sounding monotonous. In case one freezes up and forgets the lines prepared, do not stress on recollecting it but try taking a pause and improvise just like how Chandler in the TV series ‘Friends’ improvised the line “Of Course” to “Sure, where?” as they leave the apartment to hangout for one last time, thus creating an unforgettable dialogue.

2. MAINTAIN BODY LANGUAGE:

Move around or stand in one place depending upon the purpose of movement, i.e., every move should mean something that would help one to communicate more effectively. Control your hand gestures and maintain contact with your audience at all times. Standing up straight, arms unfolded and keeping your head up can help one to maintain a good posture that makes the host look confident on a stage. A firm handshake never fails to make a good impression.

3. CONFIDENCE IS THE KEY:

Whether a skilled orator or a novice, lack of confidence can give the shakes to even the greatest. Nervousness is normal and helps you in getting enthusiastic but don’t let it get you. Take deep breaths, believe in yourself and give your best. Never lower your energy and always have a smile to make your hosting effective. Accept your fear rather than fighting it and you’ll be golden. Who better to teach about confidence than our very own Phoebe from the TV series ‘Friends’ who always believed in herself, confidently sung her heart out and never pondered about what the world will think about her.

4. PRACTICE & EXCEL:

To know what your audience experiences, record yourself or practice in front of a mirror or a group of people like your family, friends, etc. as you will be able to understand how exactly you host, receive positive criticisms and what are the areas you need to improve. Tutorials, blogs, magazines, etc. can provide helpful tips to hone your hosting skills. Research thoroughly on the theme of the event and always be prepared for unexpected situations and questions. One can always learn the art of hosting by observing hosts of award shows, TV shows, radio shows, etc.

5. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE:

Always research about your target audience and the guests of the event so as to know the right language and the appropriate words to be used, i.e., avoid unnecessary jargon or slang. Observe the body language of your audience and host accordingly. Entertain the audience by researching about the common topic of interest among them and by keeping a few jokes in your pocket as it can turn any precarious situation around.

In the end, just be yourself and add a unique touch to your style of hosting. Sooner or later, you will be on the crest of the wave like Ellen DeGeneres or Jimmy Kimmel, perhaps even higher!
